If you plan a change to your yard, it helps to develop the style that best suits you. It’s important to have a clear understanding of your needs, wants and tastes. Answering the following questions will help you to focus your goals.

 

How do you currently use your yard?

 

Are there new uses you would like to have?

 

What do you like about your yard?

 

What don’t you like about your yard?

 

Do you have pets and/or young children with special requirements (i.e. dog run, play set)?

 

Do you, or would you like to entertain outdoors frequently?

 

Would you like to draw attention to the architectural style of your house?

 

Do you have an unsightly view that you would prefer be blocked?

 

Does the site need any special screening to ensure privacy?

 

Do you have drainage problems?

 

Does the area you are considering receive direct sunlight? If so, is it am or pm sunlight?

 

Does the area have access to electric and/or water?

 

Do you need to buffer noise from an outside source? (i.e. traffic, etc.)

 

Is there a landscape style you like? (i.e. cottage, tropical, Asian, etc.)

 

Is there a particular type of water feature you prefer? (i.e. fountain, pond, swimmable, etc.)

 

Are there any particular plants that you especially like?

 

What sort of paving surfaces do you like? (i.e. flagstone, pavers, concrete, etc.)

 

Are there any homeowner association rules, building codes, easements or other zoning regulations that will influence what you do?

 

Are you interested in going green? (i.e. using rainwater for irrigation, solar power)

 

Do you wish to attract birds or butterflies?

 

How much time do you have for upkeep?

 

How much of a budget can you allot to the project?

 

If your budget requires you to do the project in phases, what part of the overall project is the priority?
